As skateboarders go I pretty much suck. However, I am a full time job Joe and as of this writing in my late 40s. The fact I can still ollie at all pretty much amazes me. I don't do it often, I prefer carving, but when I do it well I always try to get a picture. My favorite pictures though have always been in interesting places, or interesting filters or some combination like that. So here is a collection of those.
Starting with the main page picture and the next two - this was my half buried garage in Groveland, MA from 2011-2016 where I often would skate (had ramps and everything) when going to the park wasn't practical or I didn't feel like burning dinosaur bones to get someplace.
This next one I remember real well because it was bleeping-azz cold outside. I needed to play so I went and sessioned for about a half hour before stuff started to go number and I called it quits:
Yes I did get chased out of some these spots by cops. I think the last time I got told to go home I was 42 years old. I think because of my age the idea of ticketing me just seemed ridiculous to the cop. This particular spot somewhere in Salisbury, MA I was chased out of. It doesn't look it but that incline is long and steep and a ton of fun. Even trying to wax and tail slide or just huck the wood sides was a blast. I spent a lot of time there.
No joke the next town south I found this gem. It is a loading dock with mellow banks on both sides. When I found it (I think it was 2014?) it was still ridable, barely. It was by a main road so I limited my visits to five to ten minutes or so when it was empty (and it wasn't often). My favorite thing to do there was ride up to the top, kick turn to where I was backsided, ollie in place, turn again and roll to the other side. It was like a super mellow stall without the coping. Look carefully and you will see the devil raked the pavement in a few places. Now it is a total wreck.
A few years ago yet another crazy ass New England snow storm was on its way to bury us all alive. The day before in 30 degree weather I drug my sorry ass across the river to an abandoned storefront spot. I was getting some while there was any to be got:
One fine cold spring day I was leaving a friends house and noticed a building being redone with new pavement and everything. Paid a visit to it the next weekend to find it totally empty.
Next up is from a session underneath empty condos at Ocean City MD. There was supposed to be surf in January 2018 but it stalled out a couple days. The interesting thing is I was not the only skater doing this. I came across three other skaters under condos and hotels looking for sketch:
Ollie practice can be done in all sorts of places. One of my favorites is hard packed dirt. I used to ollie by my shed in the back yard with a fire going in the pit when I still lived in New England. Fun times.
